Our story

In 1760 – William Jones and Francis Yarrell formed the company known as Jones and Yarrell.

By 1770 Jones and Yarrell opened a branch at 21 Duke Street, St James (this was at the time the first London Street to be paved). This address was an ideal complement to their Temple shop and serviced as an excellent centre for stationery and news agency trade in the West End.

In 1808 the Company now trading as Stationers, Booksellers and Newsmen and had moved their business to larger premises at 34, Bury Street.

In 1837 Jones and Yarrell is awarded its first Royal Warrant from HRH Queen Victoria.

By 1850 both the original partners had died, and the business became the sole property of a relative, one William Yarrell.

In 1896 Mr Atkinson a forward-thinking manager was taken on and by 1908 the business had grown and had now opened a shop in the West End. Succeeded by his son who lifted the company profile even further between the war years.

In 1946 Jones Yarrell becomes a Limited company.

In 1960 HRH Queen Elizabeth II granted a Royal Warrant, going on to also be awarded the Royal Warrants for HRH Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip), HRH Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, HRH Prince of Wales (Charles III).

In 2007 Jones Yarrell purchased Leadenhall News creating Jones Yarrell Leadenhall (JYL) as it is known today.
